Creating new political nations was often accompanied by frenetic work to develop a cultural infrastructure. In the case of the Macedonians, for example, a well known Harvard Slavicist, Horace Landt, was brought in to create a grammar for the Macedonian language.

On the language issue, it is of course fair to say that the Bulgarians are the main adversaries of the Macedonian language, but this is hardly surprising as it so resembles Bulgarian. But it is simply not true to imply that this is a unique situation because of 'special political factors.' Many Serbs consider 'Macedonian' to be really a dialect of Serbian, and so on. In many of the'20 countries' where Macedonian is studied, it takes place because of the existence of powerful political lobbies from FYROM within them, as in Canada and many parts of Australia. Good luck to the people who study it in these institutions, but is is unreasonable to claim that these studies take place outside a political context, in an atmosphere of non-political objectivity regarding the nature of what they are studying.
