PROFESSOR LIUBOMIR MILETICH

On December 21, 1923 in an auditorium, ten of Sofia University's 52 professors, scholars, writers and public figures from among the Bulgarian-Macedonians founded the Macedonian Scientific Institute (MSI). With Professor Dr Ivan Georgov elected the first president (1924-1928), the MSI began to publish the journal Macedonian Review and other studies to
defend the truth about the character of the national struggles in Macedonia, both in the period of the spiritual and educational revival and during the time of the revolutionary liberation struggles in which chiefly the Bulgarian population in Macedonia took part
From 1928 to 1937 the MSI was headed by the famous and revered Bulgarian scholar Professor Liubomir Miletich. Under his direction a large-scale research effort was undertaken culminating in the building of the Macedonian House of Culture. After Professor Miletich's death Professor Nikola Stoyanov (1938-1945) continued the patriotic activities of the MSI.

After 1945 the work of the MSI was politicised and corrupted to serve internationalism, and the Editorial Board, headed by Professor Stoyanov, was replaced by order of the Ministry of the Inferior. In 1947, on the repeated demands of Skopye and Belgrade the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Workers' Party (communists) "recommended" closure of the MSI. Both the archives and the vast museum collection, together with the mortal remains of Gotse Delchev were delivered to the Serbo-communists in Skopye. Possibly the most catastrophic example of national betrayal and treason ever sanctioned by Bulgarians against their own nation.

On May 3, 1990 the MSI was restored. A Scientific Council and 5-member Executive Council were elected with Professor Petar Shapkarev the new president. Since June 29, 1997 the president of the MSI has been Professor Dimitar Gotsev. Publication of the "Macedonian Review" recommenced, the first issue being Volume XIV, 1991, No.1. Each issue now has an accompanying English translation for the contents page, as well as an English article Abstract.

As the original "Macedonian Review", first published in 1924, had no English translations, we have provided English Contents pages for Volumes 1 - 6 so that all people may appreciate the range and wealth of material published on the "Macedonian Question" by Macedonians driven from their homeland. We are forever indebited to Larry Koroloff for his dedication, effort and patriotism in performing the translations. The "truth" will never be extinguished while we have this global support of Macedonian patriots.
